The second Sunday in May is widely celebrated as Mother’s Day, a day for children to honour their mother and express how much she means to them. Do you know that Mother’s Day began in United States at the turn of the twentieth century?
A lady named Anna Jarvis started a campaign in 1905 to make Mother's Day a recognised holiday in the United States after her mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis, died. She wanted to honour all mothers because she believed a mother is "the person who has done more for you than anyone in the world". Ann distributed 500 carnations at the first official service to commemorate Mother’s Day because they were her mother’s favourite flower. Over time, carnation flowers came to be regarded as the official flower of Mother’s Day.
At Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan Cultural Academy, we teach our students to be appreciative of their family members, and that kinship is important. Through our curriculum such as 弟子规, storytelling and arts and craft sessions, we impart values like gratitude (感恩) and respect （尊敬）.
This year, our students commemorate this special occasion with their own handmade cards and creations.
