Labour Day is linked to the day known as International Workers’ Day, which has its roots from the Haymarket Affair.

On 1 May 1886 in Chicago, USA, dozens of demonstrators and several police were killed after an unknown person threw a bomb into a public assembly of people who were on strike, protesting for an eight-hour working day instead of the common 10 to 12-hour workday. This incident was commemorated as the Haymarket affair.

After a meeting of international leaders in Paris in 1891, 1 May became a day dedicated to the working classes in many countries.

In Singapore, we declare May Day as a public holiday to celebrate the working class, a day of special significance for organised workers, as it serves to remind others what their collective strength has achieved for workers and nation-building.

At Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan Cultural Academy, we teach our students to appreciate the contributions of the working class to our country and people, and the importance of solidarity and harmony.

Our students are taught that every profession has a role to play in our nation, and no work is less significant through activities like gardening, organising and cleaning their own stations, etc.
